Detailed Instructions on Getting D-Eye and YawCam to work

Detailed guide to get your YawCam and D-Eye set-up running properly. Also includes a guide for people who have a dynamic IP address from their ISP.

A.    Install YawCam

1. Download YawCam here and Install
2. Change the port number used for HTTP (the default is 8888)
3. Enable HTTP and Motion
4. Motion is not really used but is necessary to prevent the image from a single moment being retained throughout the day
5. Check if YawCam works by going to http://localhost:8888
6. Replace 8888 with the port number that you specified above. It should open a page that says “It’s a Webcam with a photo taken from your Webcam.
7. Close YawCam
8. Execute Yawcam-NTservice-Install.bat (You might need to run it as administrator)
   

   This step is necessary to start YawCam as a service. This ensures that YawCam starts every time you open your computer and that users cannot terminate YawCam easily. Running YawCam as a service also removes the YawCam icon from the taskbar.

9. Execute Yawcam-NTservice-Start.bat or restart your computer
10. Installing YawCam as a service does not start it automatically. You either need to execute this, start the service manually, or simply restart your computer. After doing any of the three, you can check that YawCam is actually running by doing step d again

If you intend to have YawCam running on multiple user accounts, you might need to repeat steps B to F on every user account that you want it to run on

B.    Allow incoming connections on Windows Firewall for people who still prefer to have   Windows Firewall running.

You can check if you’ve done this step properly by going to another computer on your network and browsing to http://192.168.x.xx:xxxx the first set of numbers being the IP address of the computer running YawCam and the second set being the port number you specified above.

C.    Forward Ports from your router

Forward incoming ports from your router to the IP address of the computer running YawCam. Just make sure that it has a static IP or you might run into problems later. You can test if the port is forwarded properly by using a computer with a separate internet connection and typing the IP address and the port of the network you want to monitor. You can easily get this by going to the computer running YawCam and browsing to www.whatsmyip.org.

D.    Install D-Eye on remote computer
 

E.    Input the IP address and port number

Note:  As of the moment, you should remove the "http://" from your URL. Use 192.168.1.2 instead of http://192.168.1.2 or mysite.dyndns.com instead of htpp://mysite.dyndns.com. A fix would be introduced in a later version to accept values regardless of whether it has http:// or not.
 

F.    Set-up a Dynamic DNS account (optional)
 

This is an optional step for people who do not have a static IP. People with static IPs can skip this step and just enter the IP address on the D-Eye settings page. Go to www.dyndns.com and register for a free account. Choose and set-up a hostname to you use. DynDNS provides a lot of options like .gotodns.org or .webhop.biz. After getting your account and hostname, you need an updater that would automatically update your IP address. Check your router first as some routers have a DDNS page where you can specify your provider, hostname, username, and password.
